The construction journey for a couple who completed a knockdown rebuild in Castle Hill ends on a high note, even through tough conditions.

On a brisk and sunny winter afternoon in a quiet leafy suburb in north west Sydney, the team at Worthington Homes marked the end of the construction journey for Con and Lilly for their knockdown rebuild project in Castle Hill.

Through COVID-19 and unrelenting torrential rain over the wettest summer on record, Liam Worthington and his team delighted clients Con and Lilly, presenting their finished home with great joy in June, 2022.

Previously a fibro house built in the 70s and aged well beyond its years in condition, style and layout, is now a ‘forever’ 4-bedroom 286m² single storey home that’s a standout in the neighbourhood.

With the potential for grandkids on the horizon and a love for entertaining well-established friends formed over the decades, Con and Lilly’s house is a contemporary homestead made for the years to come.

A trouble-free experience in turbulent times

Thanks to a team effort by Worthington designers, estimators and builders, the project was still able to progress – even when things took a slight pause, thanks to lockdowns and the effects of La Niña.

Lilly says, “We had our beautiful house built by Worthington Homes. With a professional and kind attitude Liam, the managing director, has been accessible at all times, providing us with answers to all the questions, big and small that we’ve had about the process. Everyone at Worthington has provided us with a trouble-free experience that has made what I thought would be a difficult process, very easy.”

“This takes into account building site lockdown because of COVID-19 and the subsequent building supply shortages, as well as unending rain,” Lilly adds.

Today, the residential construction sector has certainly taken a hit caused by COVID-19, extreme weather conditions, labour shortages and inflation. However, despite the industry challenges faced by project builders Australia-wide, Worthington Homes were still able to deliver a high-quality home within budget and over a reasonable amount of time given the exceptional circumstances.

Also worth noting is the ongoing service delivered by site supervisor, Joel, who made it his priority to maintain regular communication throughout the life of the build.

Lilly says, “Joel, the site manager inspires positivity and his ‘can do’ attitude is a bonus when dealing with the upheaval that building a home causes in life. All aspects of our project were extremely well-coordinated, researched and delivered by Joel and not only this, he went out of his way to be available whenever necessary for additional work that we needed with a cheerful attitude.”

“If there were any issues, Joel immediately attended to the problem and fixed it to our satisfaction. We were also kept up-to-date regarding progress on a weekly basis and sometimes more often.”

“I would say that Joel has made our building experience outstanding and we feel we’ve made a friend along the way,” Lilly beams.

“This is going straight to the billiards room!”

Much like Darryl Kerrigan from the 1997 cult sensation The Castle, Con wanted a special place in his home for mates and memories.

Included on the ‘wish list’ was a dedicated snooker room with floating shelves to serve as a trophy cabinet. In the standard design, typically this space would be a rumpus or fifth bedroom. But with Con’s love for having friends over for pool, the billiard room was not optional.

Con explains, “People coming together over some hearty competition and relaxation – what’s a home without a billiards room?”

“Plus, this is the last house build for my lifetime. Being the third and final over the last 45 years, building with Worthington Homes was far from the stressful experience I’ve had in the past.”

Other features in the design include a mud room laundry for washing and storing bulky sportswear, as well as a luxury bathroom with floor-to-ceiling tiles, a drop-in bath, shower with tiled niche and double sink vanities.

In addition to beautiful indoor spaces, the outdoor areas were built to serve as a cohesive extension of the inside.

An atrium courtyard visible from the master and third bedroom filled with feature plants and décor would serve as a tranquil space for inner calm.

In addition, an oversized alfresco extending into a landscaped backyard and adjoining pergola area for summer BBQs and beers were purposefully considered as part of the brief.

A clean, crisp and classic masterpiece

With cool hues of bright white and grey, Con and Lilly wanted a classic home that would be timeless in style.

Made up of a unified palette of flooring consisting of hybrid timber floorboards in Spotted Gum and lush grey carpet to all bedrooms, the home is a clean, crisp and classic masterpiece.

And thanks to the Worthington Homes network of trade partners, designers and even a bit of assistance from their very own inhouse operations and estimating manager, Darren, all colour and material selections combined seamlessly to form a modern Hamptons palette.

A signature kitchen made up of colours selected with meticulous care, consisting of 900mm stainless steel appliances, walk-in pantry, joinery in Palomera Oak Woodmatt and Caesarstone benchtops in Alpine Mist, finished off with an island bench in 40mm stone with waterfall ends as the centrepiece of an attractive yet functional kitchen.

Externally, Colorbond colours such as Basalt, Shale Grey and Surfmist were perfectly unified with Austral Bricks Wilderness Silver Birch complimented with a stark Perisher White garage door and Crisp White front entry door.

At first glance, the homestead clearly stands out, with neighbours asking Con and Lilly about their own potential knockdown rebuild in the Hills District.
